Truths and lies about leather

 | May 22, 2019 Commentary

Around the leather industry countless affirmations are made,in many cases not all true. Are animals raised to tan their skins? Can leather be recycled? How polluting is leather tanning? What is the carbon footprint of leather production? To answer these and many other questions, Leather Naturally , an initiative in defense of leather, has produced a document in which it reveals what is true and what is false about everything that is said about the leather industry.
Animals are bred for tanning their skins: fake
Skin and leather are a by-product of the meat industry. Only a small part of the skins is used in the exotic leather industry, which is, from an ethical point of view, in a "gray area".
Leather is a sustainable product: true
Leather as a raw material is generated in a renewable way, since consumers will always need animal meat. The manufacturing process, if carried out with good environmental controls, has a minimal impact and the complete life cycle of the leather has a lower carbon footprint and water consumption than any other material, since it increases the durability of the product. In addition, during the final phase of life of the product, the leather is rapidly degraded by chemical and biological means.
The leather contains toxic substances: fake
The leather made in a responsible way avoids toxic substances. The best technologies for the tanning of skins that are currently available do not require toxic chemicals and these work in the main tanneries around the world. Sometimes substances are restricted inadvertently due to certain impurities, but this is the reason why all the leather is analyzed, to ensure that they are safe.
Leather is a renewable material: real
Leather and skins are always a by-product of the meat industry. Animals are part of the diets of many consumers and, therefore, their consumption will always be demanded. The skins of animals raised for the consumption of their meat are used to shape a new material, otherwise they would become waste.
Leather degrades better than synthetic materials: true
Petrochemical-based materials are relatively inert and poor in nutrients for bacteria and fungi. Leather, on the other hand, is rich in carbon, nitrogen and oxygen; three elements that bacteria and fungi like to eat. Therefore, in the biosphere, leather decomposes much faster than synthetic materials.
Leather can only be made with animal skins: true
The definition of leather in internationally agreed regulations insists that leather can not disintegrate and regenerate and must have a coating, largely intact, from an animal.
Leather can be recycled: true
The agglomerate of leather fibers has been used for more than 70 years as footwear material. Leather compounds have existed since the beginning of the 21st century and since then much work has been done to produce a greater diversity of recycled leathers.
Synthetic materials are made of natural fibers: false
To distinguish synthetic materials from natural ones, the term synthetic refers to materials constructed from subunits that are derived from the use of synthetic sources (for example, chemical products derived from petroleum) , while the natural ones usually come from an animal. Alternatives to leather are largely synthetic (based on petrochemicals). There are only some innovative natural alternatives to leather.
Leathers can be made from sources other than animals: false International
regulations and definitions and, in many cases, national laws prohibit the use of the word "leather" unless it comes from an animal. Labeling something that does not come from an animal such as leather is illegal in many countries.
Leather is only manufactured in underdeveloped countries: false
The best tanneries in the world are based in both low income countries and high income countries. Any company in the world that is prepared to invest in state-of-the-art facilities and environmental protections will be welcome in the leather industry.
Leather goods are not durable: fake
New consumers quickly learn that there is a big difference between leather and leather alternatives when it comes to durability. Very few alternatives to leather can match its durability and its high quality performance.
Leather can be distinguished from other materials by the "smell of leather": false
While some leathers have a characteristic odor, many consumers now require that their skin has a neutral odor. The tanners make the leather smell less. If a consumer wants it to smell like leather, the tanner can use vegetable tanning agents and fish oil to give it that characteristic odor.
Leather is a natural product: true
Few things are more natural than an animal skin, which is largely protein, moisture and air. The tanning substances protect the product during its entire useful life and then allow the biosphere to degrade the leather quickly.
Suede or nubuck are not leathers: fake
The top or bottom layer of the skin can be turned into suede and the top grain layer can be turned into nubuck. Nubuck can be called "genuine leather", but in the case of suede it should be called "genuine suede leather", since it has no finish.
Synthetic materials are sold as leather: real
The reputation of leather is so good that some want to cheat consumers by labeling their products as leather. Unfortunately some consumers buy these synthetics thinking they are real leather and then disappointed by the lack of performance of these fraudulent products.
Leather is a modern product: true
Modern skins are highly technical and have a range of features that can offer the user attributes that most other materials can not, such as water resistance, fire resistance, breathability, antibacterial protection, thermal protection, anti-abrasion, high grip, exceptional softness, laser engraving, body sensory implants, ultraviolet color change, color change due to heat and dimensional stability.
Leather is the best material for shoes: true
In terms of comfort and resistance, durability to scratching and abrasion, ability to mold the body, stretch around the foot, easy maintenance, repairability and breathability, very few materials can match their properties in a shoe.
Leather has a large carbon footprint: false
After thoroughly assessing the environmental footprint of bovine leather products, the European Commission has restricted the environmental footprint of the animal's life cycle to 0.42 percent.
Leather is not an ecological product: false
Very few modern materials have the ability to degrade in the biosphere like leather does. The manufacture of leather improves continuously, in the same way that many modern tanneries have a minimal impact on their environment. As a renewable material, leather is an ecological material in all types of products.
Leather is a byproduct: true
Yes, hides and skins are a by-product of the meat industry.
